7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb
Day 1 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp | 10.75KM / 7MI | 5-6 HRS | Rainforest
Elevation: 1811m → 3021m | Altitude gained: 1210m
Depart from Arusha and drive to the Machame Gate. Begin your trek through lush rainforest trails, observing local flora and wildlife. The path can be slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. Overnight at Machame Camp.
Day 2 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp | 5.3KM / 3MI | 4-5 HRS | Moorland
Elevation: 3021m → 3839m | Altitude gained: 818m
Trek out of the rainforest into moorland, crossing a steep ridge and a river gorge before reaching Shira Camp. Temperatures start dropping as altitude increases. Overnight at Shira Camp.
Day 3 – Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp | 10.75KM / 6MI | 5-6 HRS | Semi-Desert
Elevation: 3839m → 3986m | Altitude gained: 147m
Ascend gently for acclimatization, passing the Lava Tower and scenic junctions. Descend slightly to Barranco Camp for overnight, preparing for higher altitudes.
Day 4 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp | 5.2KM / 3MI | 3-4 HRS | Alpine Desert
Elevation: 3986m → 4034m | Altitude gained: 48m
Tackle the Barranco Wall and traverse to Karanga Camp. Witness the skill of your crew navigating steep ridges. Overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 5 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp | 3.3KM / 2MI | 3-4 HRS | Alpine Desert
Elevation: 4034m → 4662m | Altitude gained: 628m
Ascend to Barafu Camp with stunning summit views. Rest early in preparation for summit night. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Day 6 – Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp | 4.86KM UP / 11.5KM DOWN | 5-7 HRS UP | 5-6 HRS DOWN | Glaciers, Snow Capped Summit
Elevation: 4662m → 5895m / descent to 3106m | Altitude gained: 1233m | Altitude lost: 2789m
Begin early before midnight to summit Uhuru Peak. Celebrate your achievement and descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp. Overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi | 9.1KM / 6MI | 3-4 HRS | Rainforest
Elevation: 3106m → 1633m | Altitude lost: 1473m
Complete the descent through rainforest, receive summit certificates at the gate, and transfer back to your hotel in Arusha for rest and celebration. Overnight Silver Palm Hotel B&B.
